Due for a bit of a trim?
Are your hedges looking a bit shabby around the edges? Now is a great time to get trimming.
Hedges need trimming at least once a year, but as a general rule the more often you do them the better the result! More frequently trimmed hedges end up straighter, thicker and tidier.
Hedges have a tendency to grow out at the top which can shade the lower sections, making them see-through and unhealthy down low. The ideal shape for a hedge is for the face to gently slope inwards toward the top. Whether or not this is possible depends on how past trims have been completed and how regularly the hedge is trimmed.
If they aren’t regularly brought into line by someone who knows what their doing they often end up with an outward slope at the top which is the exact opposite of what you want. Additionally, not trimming often or hard enough can allow the hedge to grow wider and wider. This is a problem that is sometimes impossible to rectify depending on the species.
Some of the nicest hedges we maintain are on a three-monthly trimming cycle. Although it is often not possible or even necessary to trim so often, it can yield some outstanding results!
